I got this softcover from an online seller. It's set in a world where a mysterious "fall" of meteorites (or something...) has caused genetic mutations resulting in people called Charmers, with the ability to regenerate themselves every seven years - through the process of throwing off a "skin", a duplicate of themselves, which takes scars, wounds, and some amount of aging with them. These Skins disintegrate into ash within a few minutes, or at least that's what they're expected to do, but when young Caitlin celebrates her first shedding and is drawn to embrace her Skin in a gesture of thanks and affection, she's astonished to find that the Skin does not disappear. And not long afterwards, government agents collect the Skin and take it away, leading Caitlin to wonder how much she has not been told about the realities of the Charmers and their gift.

There are other characters whose viewpoints drive the narrative, including a reporter and a young man who's been tutoring the neglected, bullied son of one of the more powerful members of government. Their storylines intersect as we learn more about the political conspiracy to not only retain power among the Charmers but to select which people will be given the gift when the next Fall arrives... The climax is lively and dramatic - and, for me, highly satisfactory, though it doesn't come without some cost. Unusual twist on the concept of clones.
