Like many of Barnes's books, it's not easy to describe exactly what this book is about, or to separate the "bad guys" from the "good guys" - like life, it's messy and complicated. Depressing at times, but also uplifting in the way that the central character struggles through, not always making the best decisions in life, but making the only decisions that make sense to him at the time.

I agree with Futurecat - a difficult book to categorise. Well written but I can’t say I enjoyed it.
