An unnamed first person narrator, possibly between 20 and 30, is on his way to India on his motorbike. But first he is spending a few days camping in the Lake District, a mountainous holiday region in North West England. He agrees to help the campsite owner Parker with the simple chore of painting a gate (for free camping). Harmless enough, as it appears. But then, one task leads to another ... and soon the young man finds himself entangled into an array of disparate chores, of which there seems to be no escape ...
The village is seemingly inhabited only by men, no wives or mothers are ever mentioned, Parker's teenage daughter and the captain of the adversary dart team are the only women in the book.
The humour is deadpan, the athmosphere a bit surreal, darkish and slightly suffocating; imagine a David Lynch movie. Not much really happens, but the story is far from being boring. I think I'll have to put Mills' other books onto my wishlist :)
