I'm a bit surprised that this appeals to so many; it's not the average American story. A keen, shrewd travesty of WW2 with pitch black pitted humour and astonishing far-sight. More a kaleidoscope of events in the past or in the future - the hero Billy Pilgrim is constantly and involuntarily time-travelling, finding himself at random in the trenches of WW2 or back again in Wisconsing of 1964. Billy became a war prisoner of the Germans and was hold in a former slaughterhouse in Dresden - thus the title.
One day he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore who don't know the linear principle of time. On Tralfamadore, everything happens in the same time, hence they know what lies in our future or happened in the past.
The story itself is made in Tralfamadore style, backwards, forth, a coincident, concurrent pattern of story parts, but genuinely funny in spite of its cruel, gruelling war background. A must read.
