I got this ex-library hardcover from Better World Books, for another release copy. I've been enjoying the series, which starts with Thirteenth Night, and wanted to read them all!

This book picks up from The Moneylender of Toulouse, with our heroes settling in nicely in their new town. But when a man shows up claiming to be Count Raimon's long-lost - and hitherto unheard-of - full brother, and shortly afterwards is found asleep next to the body of a murdered prostitute, Theophilos and company set to work to learn the truth: not only whether Baudoin is the count's brother but whether he's as guilty as the evidence suggests...

I really love this series, as much for the loving banter between Theo and his wife - and their apprentice Helga, and even little Portia, a year and a half old now and starting to banter a bit herself {wry grin} - as for the plots. Indeed,I think I'd read on and on just for their sparkling conversations and the lavish descriptions of their pratfalls, juggling routines, slight-of-hand, and other skills.

While Theo and Claudia are - despite the bickering - very much in love, Claudia still has nagging regrets about having left her children by her first husband in the care of a regent. True, if she'd stayed there she'd have had little contact with them, but it might be better than none, and Theo realizes she'd very much like to go and see them. But they're both professional fools now, and the guild has its own agenda...

The main plot had many interesting twists and turns, involving hidden tragedies and betrayals long past, and some current issues that - well, I'll leave that for the reader. But my interest was in the fate of our heroes, not least because - so far - this is the last book in the series {sob}. I found the conclusion of this book quite satisfying, and yet I would really, really like to read more about their adventures.

Hilarious, historical, great fun. I can't recommend this series highly enough!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series.]
