I was a bit disappointed in this and didn't enjoy it as much as the first book in the series. Jack was one of my favorite characters from the first book, but she seemed less fully realized in this one. I missed the setting of Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children from the fist book and also the more extensive ensemble of characters.

This book focused on Jack and Jill's portal experience in the Moors, but somehow the plot never really came together for me. It felt more like the outline of a story rather than an actual story. I wonder if the author rushed a bit with this second book.

I will continue on with the series for now, but if the third book doesn't charm me I will probably stop after that one.

The first thing I have to say is I've done a very un-Bookcrossinglike thing with this book. I got it signed by Seanan McGuire and I'm pulling it from the world's library into mine.

There are so many things to love about this book, where do I start?

The easy first is that this book can be read in one sitting or two of my bus commutes. I love books of all sizes, but right now, that length is perfect! Thank you, Seanan, for writing both behemoth and small books we can enjoy.

I love how this book explores how a person is who they are and also how they can change, and how they are still the same person. I love how this book shows the harm parents can cause to children by forcing them into boxes rather than let them be who they are. I love how this book explains how we got two amazing characters in the previous book.

I loved the descriptions and the art!

I will be diving into Beneath a Sugar Sky next, and continuing through to her latest Wayward children release. I highly recommend for everybody!
