Journal Entry 1 by BookGroupMan from Chester, Cheshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 16, 2019
(16/10/19) It took a while for me to get into this memoir. I don't know Sedaris - an American 'humorist' what ever that means - so I struggled being sympathetic with his whole voice coaching, gender-alignment thing. When it became obvious that he is gay, and Jewish, trying to be funny in a series of episodes from his life, then I sort-of got it. We follow the young Sedaris into a number of dead-end jobs, house moves, relationships, and snippets into the life of his parents and siblings. The 'talk pretty' of the title relates to a French language course that he takes in Paris, by dint of having a partner with a house in Normandy. Sedaris is now 40 years-old, and I still don't know where he's going and what he is! A few funnies, but not my thing really :(
