This is not an ordinary book: it's a BookCrossing book! BookCrossing books are world travelers - they like to have adventures and make new friends...and every once in a while they even write home to say what they've been doing.

Story by P.Y. (Patsy) Iwasaki; art by Berido.

History in graphic format from a rummage sale at Nuuanu Congregational; signed by the author.

I believe that all of my great-grandparents (and one set of great-great-grandparents) came to Hawaii because of sugar, so stories like this - while not happy - are an important part of my heritage. One great-grandfather had a store in Kona (on the same island as Hamakua) and that was at least one of the reasons he was sent to an internment camp during WWII.

I do wish the production values were higher: just as one example, the page numbers for the "hidden items" are nearly all wrong.

Here's another copy on my BookCrossing shelf.

This came back in my manga and graphic novel book box. I have been watching the journal entries on the coloring book box journal and wondering what will end up back with me. There was quite a lot of variety in the box at the end and I am happy to see many books that I have not read before.

This was an interesting look at the Japanese migrant worker's life in the nineteenth century Hawaii. it's told through the story of one Japanese man who was lynched for his helping promote worker's rights by the sugar cane rancher whom he worked for for four years. This was an interesting little book with a very strong message.
