Wonderful story - I really like the era and place (London), and this book had a brilliant way to describe the habits and way of life there and then! And the characters, loved them too!

I give up, it's my personal book curse again. No matter how much I'd love to enjoy Waters' novels, I can only appreciate her works. There's no personal enjoyment in diving into her Victorian world and every time her protagonists just seem to move from one kind of suffering to another. In the 60s lesbian themed pulp stories had to have an unhappy ending in the US (not to promote homosexuality), but with Waters it seems like she makes everyone miserable throughout the story and only presents a pale glimmer of lukewarm happiness at the last page. I'll stick to the BBC adaptations in the future...
