I got this softcover at the Book Cellar, largely because it's set in the Hudson River Valley, which I've visited as I have family living in the area. The book's about a couple who've moved to a crumbling estate along the Hudson, to work as caretakers for the aging professor and author who owns it. They both studied under him in their college days; now, promising writer Clare has drifted away from her work, while her husband Jess had a huge initial success - but is now stuck firmly in the grip of writer's block. Professional frustrations are only part of the problem, of course; the house itself has a troubled history, there are sounds in the night, rumors of hauntings, strange goings-on... and increasing emotional stress has its effects on all of the residents of the house.
There's some good atmosphere here, and a nice ratcheting-up of the tension; in the end, though, I found the twists and turns far too convoluted, and along the way I grew rather impatient with the characters and their choices.
