I found this softcover at a local Savers thrift shop. The title and cover-art caught my eye, and the subject appealed to me: the author writes about wintertime visits to a variety of beaches along the east coast, from Bar Harbor Maine to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The narratives include travelogues, natural history and geology, local history, and personal memoir, all blended together in lovely and readable prose. It reminded me of Henry Beston's classic The Outermost House, and I wasn't surprised to find references to that work in the section on the beaches of Cape Cod! (I was a wee bit miffed to find that the author skipped New Hampshire entirely, hopping from the beaches of Maine to those of Cape Ann in Massachusetts. True, the New Hampshire coast is very short, but it has nice beaches too...)

I left this book in the Little Free Library on this lovely fall day; hope someone enjoys it!
