Whenever I read something by Jeanette Winterson, I feel like I'm not educated enough to fully understand all the complex layers of meaning that I can dimly detect beneath the surface. But even reading superficially, there's a lot in this book. It's simultaneously the (slightly fictionalised) story of how Frankenstein came to be written, and an exploration of what Frankenstein means today, when we are so close to developing so much technology that echoes the novel: what will it mean when we can bring the (cryogenically preserved) dead back to life, create new (trans) bodies for ourselves, and design our ideal (AI) companions?
