The central concept - of Sara travelling all the way to rule Iowa only to find her penfriend dead and the neighbours determined that she should enjoy her holiday anyway - is pretty funny and unusual. That said, this style of writing isn't my usual cup of tea tbh - a bit too folksy. I love reading, but I don't think about it anywhere near as idealistically as Sara does. I kept losing track of who was who and didn't really care much about anyone until halfway through.

The story did pull itself into a surer direction eventually and I began to enjoy it more. (The ending for example is ridiculous, but quite fun.) Overall I don't think I'll look out any further novels by Katarina Bivald, but I'm fairly pleased to have read this one.

Took a while to get into this but have to say I loved it. Made some notes which are currently MIA I’ll add them when they turn up.

There was a plodding lumpish reticence about the reserved Sara which was both exasperating yet strangely endearing… Yup, spose the writing was a bit folksy but a curious mix of Annie Proulx, Fannie Flagg and someone/something else I can’t quite put my thoughts to identifying. As far as I understand it the reticence and the quiet and slow reflection of life can be quite a Swedish character trait, that quiet contemplation of icicles forming, sort of thing. Anyhow, it was deliberately conjured to echo the feel of life in the once busier small town.
