Every year when I was a child, my dear aunt Judy mailed hardcover Thornton W. Burgess books to my sister and I for Christmas and our birthdays. She took the time to keep track of which ones she had sent so that we never got a duplicate; over the years we acquired a huge collection. We loved all these animal stories, and re-read them until they were in tatters. Now my beloved aunt has vision problems and and dementia and can no longer read, but the love of reading, and of animals, that she fostered in my sister and me is part of her legacy.
I found this old edition in the secondhand section of my local bookstore. Re-reading it was a bittersweet experience- the story is charming, and seeing the names of places and characters from the series brought back fond memories.
