Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy--as in standing-on-the-balcony-and-firing-paintball-guns-at-strangers crazy. She is also Elsa's best, and only, friend. At night, Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land-of-Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal. When Elsa's grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsa's greatest adventure begins. Her grandmother's instructions lead her to misfits, monsters, attack dogs, and old crones, but also to the truth about fairy tales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other.

It was hard to understand what was happening but the author does it on purpose. There is a lot of fantasy tales that the grandmother has created and told to her granddaughter. The fantasy tales are woven throughout the book making it hard to figure out what is happening. Things change towards the end of the book, and a lot of the change is in how the granddaughter sees the people around her and understands their individual stories and what makes them behave the way they do.

Thank you so much, tabby-cat-owner, for the gift of finding surprise box on my porch when coming home after an especially hard day. I have spent the last week being a daytime hospice nurse to a sweet sweet kitty that has been a pet sitting client of mine for a while. Though her mom knew she wasn’t going to get well, it took till today’s very bad afternoon for mom to admit that, and realize it’s time to let her go. She made the call to laps of love for them to come on Thursday morning, though I don’t know if Daisy will stay that long. At any rate I shall go in again in the morning, and continue to keep her comfortable.

A wonderful animal book surprise is just what I needed. THANK YOU.

It also makes me realize how badly I need to do another wild things book box – I have just kept putting it off because 99% of the animal books I seem to currently have are not wild ! Lol
