Wow, wow, wow! I have rated this book 10 stars and this is the first book I have really enjoyed and not wanted to put down since COVID-19 has turned our world upside down.
I loved the short chapters moving from character to character, place to place and through the different time periods.
The story was developed from two viewpoints and their eventual coming together - a young blind girl, Marie-Laure in Paris and an orphan, Werner in a town in Germany.
The horror of war told from young Werner’s perspective was very personal, particularly about his young sensitive friend Frederick and his voice of reason, his only sister Jutta.
A beautiful, well crafted story.

A beautifully written story about strength, courage, determination and love for family, told in parallel about two young people during WW2. Marie-Laure has been blind since she was 6 years old, and lives in Paris with her father. He works as the locksmith and the keeper of the keys at the Museum of Natural History. They escape to the walled city of Saint-Malo by the sea, to her father’s family home, when the Nazis invade Paris. Werner is an orphan living in a mining town in Germany, destined to work in the coal mine, until a broken radio brings him to the attention of Hitler Youth. He finds an old radio and becomes an expert at fixing these instruments, and he is then deployed to work with a specialist group in the German army to track down members of the Resistance. Werner and Marie-Laurie’s paths cross towards the end of the war when he tracks down the radio her great uncle has been using to send messages for the Resistance, and he saves her life. A beautifully told, moving story, that because of Werner’s kindness means Marie-Clare survives into old age.
