Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. she wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend. Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled existence. Except, sometimes, everything...

Eleanor is befriended by Raymond after they try to save a man's life and suddenly her entire life changes. It is a book about loneliness, humanity, kindness and companionship. It is about how we live now with social media, peer pressure and our expectations of ourselves and others. It is very funny in places and very sad in others - a bit of a rollercoaster ride well worth taking. We really get to know Eleanor inside and out. I read a review that said “I loved Eleanor Oliphant in spite of her quirkiness”. Well I loved her because of her quirkiness. In fact I related to her so much I began to get a bit worried. I loved this book. It made me laugh out loud and weep too. It was so sad but I was rooting for her rather than pitying her.

Eleanor Oliphant is a woman with a troubled past, who doesn't fit in, and has no friends. She spends weekends alone drinking vodka and is told poisonous things about herself by her mother. Raymond from IT is the only person who talks to her, and when she develops a crush on the lead singer of a local band you just know it's going to end badly. This is a really moving book though I find the character of Eleanor is over the top and a little cringeworthy. Loneliness is a huge thing in our society and an important topic to address though it's suffered by many people who don't have anywhere near such an extreme situation as Eleanor. Nevertheless I found myself relating to Eleanor and totally understand why this book was such a hit. I would recommend it as a read.
