I always enjoy Kate Atkinson's books, good stories with quirky characters, twisted plots & black humour....there's always some cracking one-liners that make me smirk. The final line in this book in particular brought a smile to my face....though maybe that's just my sense of humour :o)
Although the characters of this story live lives far removed from one another, events conspire to link them in ways they couldn't have foreseen & by the end it all fits together as neatly as the Matryoshka dolls that Martin bought.

One of those books that is actually really hard to describe. A really diverse, odd set of characters are all witnesses, or get embroiled in, a road rage incident. But there are other coincidences and links between them that come out as the story progresses and events draw together into one tangled plot line.
I kind of liked it - the weird way that life sometimes works is highlighted really well. But somehow, although I'd be more forgiving if this happened in real life, it all just seems a step too far in fiction. Some of the coincidences feel a little strained at the edges. However, they did all hang together and, despite getting a bit annoyed with Jackson (why on earth does he just wander around Edinburgh for the whole novel instead of finding something to do?), I did enjoy trying to be one step ahead as the story unraveled. The final twist I did guess, but it was still a satisfactory ending and you felt like giving a little cheer.
Well worth the read.

Thank you so much for the lovely Christmas surprise box, in which this book arrived! I’m sorry I haven’t been able to journal sooner - this was a very thoughtful and lovely thing to do.
