I really enjoy this series and am coming to really love the recurring characters: Maisie, of course, immersed in meaningful work in 1930 and helping all those around her, Billy Beale her assistance with war injuries who makes progress of all kinds in this book, Maisie's father Jack, now working for the aristocratic family who took Maisie under their wing, Maurice Blanche, her mentor... in the second installment, we have a series of murders/perhaps suicides connecting three women as well as the daughter of a self-made millionaire, Waite, who hires Maisie to find the whereabouts of his missing daughter. You can't say too much more about this without giving away the surprises, so I won't. Of course, the wounds, both physical and emotional, of WWII have prominence of place in the tale, just as with the first one, and simply because of former readings and movies, I pretty much knew what was at the heart of this book well before the end, but it didn't spoil the story or even answer all the pieces of the puzzle, even if the motive became evident for me. It is nice to see the developing relationships between Maisie and Inspector Stratton as well as between her and Dr. Dene, new to this novel. Enough threads to keep the series going!
