Opal Jessica Clavering is the youngest daughter of a family that treats her as if she doesn't belong. At one time, the family was wealthy, but now they live in the Dower House next to the estate, Oakland Hall, that they once owned. The owner of Oakland Hall is Ben Henniker, an opal miner, who made his money in the mines of New South Wales. When Jessica is 16 years old, she is offered a chance for a new life. Jessica enters into a marriage of convenience to Ben's illegitimate son, Josslyn Madden. Joss is called the Peacock for his pride and his home "Peacocks" in Australia. Jessica returns to Australia with Joss. Someone is trying to kill her, and a famous opal called the Green Flash goes missing. Then someone is murdered.
