I’ve always enjoyed Stuart McLean’s books. Even more so than the others, this one demonstrates his keen insight into the way people’s minds work. I especially loved ‘Summer of Stars’- I am not good with children, and like Smith, I am the type of person who would be quick to try to educate the boys about the scientific explanation for shooting stars. So it was interesting for me to consider the merits of Margaret’s alternative approach- to foster their sense of wonder, excitement and curiosity by allowing them to explore their own idea, that the lights in the sky might be alien visitors. People like Margaret help give childhood its aura of magic, and probably help kids to develop the sort of creativity that Smith and I lack!
