A Spool of Blue Thread

Anne Tyler's books are loaded with the kind of tiny details that bring writing to life. I can envision every scene as vividly as if it was happening right in front of me. I also love that she eschews formulas and tidy endings. The central character of a story can just suddenly die, with half the book still to go, and you never see it coming. It's exactly like life: a bewildering mix of the inevitable and the unexpected. Also like life, her stories begin in the middle and then end, also in the middle, just a bit further along. Not always satisfying, but always delicious!
