This seems to be something of a WWII story, so although I know nothing of the author, I was happy to mooch this and will see what it's like.

I actually read this in London and will probably leave it here. This is partly fiction and partly non-fiction. I have actually visited Ravensbruck, the concentration camp described here. I went to the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the liberation with a cousin who had been interned there - and a whole train load of survivors. It was an important experience for me. We couldn‘t see much of the camp as most had been requisitioned and was being used, at the time, as a barracks for Soviet soldiers (as I recall).
This book of course does not only focus on Ravensbruck, and reading the afterwords, I realize that Caroline was the true inspiration for telling this story. A complex tale of a complex time.

I wrote the above when I first read this in October 2019.
For some reason I had listed this in my inventory as a book I hadn't yet read, so although I had the impression I had, I picked it up again and reread it, even if I did realize fairly early that it was not new to me. (Surprising how much one can forget, however. I had a vague memory of the scene outside Bon Marché with the clothing swap, but wasn't sure it was part of this book, for example).
I found this an intense read but fascinating.
