Really exciting! I loved reading these two stories.

In Treasure Island, the story is told from the point of view of a cabin boy who comes into possession of a treasure map when a mysterious sailor comes to stay at his father's inn. He and his friends go in search of the treasure, but they have to contend with the pirates...

In Kidnapped, a teenaged boy is sent away by his uncle to sea, and ends up marooned on a scottish island, in the company of a local outlaw. He has to try and make his way back, trying to stay out of trouble and having adventures involving both sides of the political war going on at the time.

I can imagine children of Stevenson's day reading these as we read Harry Potter today! They are really exciting.

It seems that the Wartime Economy Standard commended the publishing of more than one book in the same covers, at least with relatively short books like these. Maybe they were intended for "boys", but they are classics of literature and everyone should read them. Indeed, they are so well known that even someone who has never read the book and never seen a film version (like me) knows the name Long John Silver and has a fairly good image of him (interestingly, the eye-patch is wrong, but the wooden leg, the parrot chanting "Pieces of Eight!" and so on are straight out of Treasure Island).

Kidnapped is, I think, a better book, although probably a worse title; the character of Alan Breck is just fantastic (the character of the boy is clearly the same in both books, and is fairly bland, presumably so that any boy can imagine himself in that rôle).

I think it's difficult to appreciate just how imaginative these books were in their time, now that they've become so well known. They make excellent reading - you won't be able to stop!
