A Clockwork Orange

This book rocked. The movie was great too, but there's nothing like letting your imagination run as the words flow through your mind. What drives young Alex to indulge in Ultra Violence? Free will, Nature vs. Nurture. You be the judge.

Got it from Cyberwitch with a great comment about it.
It must have brought me luck because on my way back home a girl asked me for directions and we ended up talking about bookcrossing at the subway.

WOW.
What a wonderful, wonderful book!
It is hard to believe it was written 40 years ago! It seems as it was written by some 15 year old in the outskirts of Buenos Aires during 2003. I guess urban violence has become global and now we are getting our part.
The most oustanding thing is the use of language, of course. It's the torn apart, mixed, coded language of left out teens. That use of words itself is violence. The entire book is an orgy of violence, as passional and rich as sex. Luscious violence. Defining. The senseless violence of the streets and the forceful violence of the state are shown to be the same in the end.
And when violence is the only rule, life is worth nothing. A 15 year old kills an old lady almost by mistake. He is taken to a jail that will only make him more violent. Another death and then a brutal "cure". The violence of the good intentions outside. And at 18 a finished life. A middle aged man before 20. Just like that.
It's a brutal insight at the life and mind of the thousands and thousands that are born left out, the ones that have no motives whatsoever to deny their instincts. Also, a good reminder for those trying to hide the "problem kids" under the carpet or jail them forever: violence remains. Because they have nothing else to cover themselves with.
The book says several times "If a man can't choose, he is not a human being anymore" I agree completely. The question would be if Alex and his fellow have ever in their lives had any chance to choose.
