Picked up from a local little free library to read and release

This took a little bit to get into. At first I wasn't sure that I liked the main character Billy. However, as I got used to his voice the story grabbed my attention. High school senior Billy Bloom: openly gay, opinionated, flamboyant, and a bit of a drag queen has moved to Florida to live with his father. He is enrolled at a prestigious high school full of beautiful, rich, and narrow minded people. He suffers several hate crimes, ends up seriously injured, and becomes close friends with Flip Kelly, the extremely handsome school quarterback. With Flip's help Billy makes some new friends and stands up for the outcasts and shadow students at his school in his over the top and outrageous way.
This was a moving story. Funny in parts, sad in others, cringe worthy as it explores topics such as sexuality, gender identity, and feeling lost and alone in a new environment. I'm glad I picked it up from the little free library. I shall be sending it back out into the world to hopefully find a new reader.
