In 1949 four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, meet weekly to play mah-jong and tell stories of what they left behind in China. United in loss and new hope for theire daughters' futures, the call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Their daughters, who have never heard these stories, think their mothers' advice is irrelevant to their modern American lives -- until their own inner crises reveal how much they've unknowingly inherited from their mothers' pasts.

The plot is told in sections, where each section consists of the stories of the four women, or their daughters, but as I'm hopeless with exotic names I found it hard to separate who was who in each story, An interesting book, with an insight into a different way of thinking . . .
