Ten tense chapters present a tale of family love set in small town Wyoming. Whenever things seem hopeless, Little Willy looks for "a way" and finds it. His grandfather is suddenly paralyzed with despair and can't take care of the potato farm anymore so Little Willy harvests the potatoes. Then it's discovered that grandfather has despaired because he can't pay back taxes on the farm. Willy is advised to sell the farm but looks for another solution. He uses his hard-earned college savings account to enter the National Dogsled Race with his beloved dog Seachlight. There he faces the Shoshone Indian Stone Fox who has never lost a race. What could be purely a feel good story isn't that exactly. Love, hope, heartbreaking sacrifice and an unexpected reponse end the tale, almost mythically. Named a New York Times Outstanding Children's Book of 1980, Stone Fox has become a classic. Author John Reynolds Gardiner says in the afterward that this children's novel was inspired by a local legend. Soon, no doubt, there will be a 40th Anniversary Edition.
