I find Alexander McCall Smith's series books - and I am assuming that this is going to be the first in a new series - quite often a very slow burn to get started. The Isabel Dalhousie series was one such - I disliked the first book, and Isabel, and only read the second through commitment to a Bookcrossing ray. And lo and behold, I actually enjoyed it, and read several more.

This one, I'm not sure I'm going to try a second book, should one be written, as I didn't really like this one at all. I just found it very slow and somewhat trivial, even by McCall Smith's standards, and a little bit too self absorbed. The humour just didn't come across, or didn't hit my funny bone - or even wry smile generator button.

I'm always terribly impressed with McCall Smith's volume of output, but I fear his well is running a little dry.

Arrived home in the Crime/Mystery bookbox.

A well known author for me so this will stay with me until I get around to examining its contents. He ventures into a few genres but this is the first time I've seen him venture into crime!

Although this is book 1 in a series of 3 (so far), it is not the first of Detective Ulf Varg, due to 2 earlier introductions to Ulf Varg in a shorter book format. However, this book is a great introduction to the world of "sensitive" crimes and the cast of characters who make up the department of detectives that investigate them. None of the "sensitive" crimes are serious as such but in the way of Alexander McCall Smith, all is quirky throughout. I rather liked this quirky skit on Scandi Noir but I have not seen these on the shelves yet to be able to follow on.
