I got this hardcover of Scandinavian sayings at Barnes and Noble. I enjoyed the stylized artwork and the variety of expressions - such as:
"Caught with his beard in the letterbox", Swedish for, roughly, being caught with your hand in the cookie jar - found out while doing something you shouldn't.
"Like the cat around hot porridge", Swedish for "beating around the bush" - circling without actually getting to the point.
"Just pat the horse", Danish for "calm down". [I like this one; imagining that I'm patting a horse's silky muzzle would indeed be soothing!]
"Not all the Moomins are in the valley", Finnish for "the lights are on but nobody's home". [I've enjoyed several of the Moomin books, so this one amused me very much.]
And then there's "Throw the spoon in the corner", which is apparently a Finnish euphemism for kicking the bucket, buying the farm, biting the dust... somehow throwing a spoon doesn't have quite the same punch, though.
