I got this hefty ex-library hardcover from an online seller. I'd enjoyed the audiobook version of this intriguing SF/economics/sustainable-mini-ecology novel and wanted a release copy.
It's a novel/loosely-linked-story about a near-future New York beset by rising water due to global warming, with plots dealing with the current state of the economy, ecosystem, and government. It started slow, but has picked up a bit - the wacky environmentalist with the web-series is more interesting than the day-traders, with some over-the-top scenes featuring an airship-relocation of endangered polar bears that had me rolling with laughter. [Alas, the bears' eventual fates were awful, in an event that triggered the woman's alliance with the growing collection of characters attempting to implement change.]
Some of the plot threads pleased me more than others. I liked the take on post-apocalyptic changes via economic and political tweaks; not as exciting as mad-scientist stuff, but not without interest. The author did lean heavily on a number of coincidences to get the major changes implemented, but I didn't mind that. And I really liked the variety of characters and their growing and changing relationships - old and young, different races, genders, social backgrounds, with friendships and mentorships and romances.
Throughout this massive book there are amusing scrapes, conspiracies, risky escapes, technical plots and political ones, and an overall feeling of a very real time and place.
