I got this softcover from the charity-sale bin at Hannaford's. Reviewers have compared it to Bleak House, Perfume, and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, all excellent novels, and I can see why the comparisons were made - though for me this novel falls quite a bit short. That still leaves it as an enjoyable read, and perhaps it would have been better if I hadn't seen those comparisons before I looked into it {wry grin}. Anyway, it uses a found-document Victorian style (and setting) to tell a convoluted tale of secrets and vengeance and doom, with some good atmospheric bits but - for me - a tendency to drag things out in ways that I didn't find enjoyable. But I admire the style and atmosphere, and perhaps someone else will enjoy it more than I did!
