I got this oversized hardcover at a local Savers thrift shop. It's about the race to complete the transcontinental railroad, with rail lines being built from the west and east simultaneously, until they met for the historic ceremony featuring the Golden Spike. The story includes massive amounts of effort, danger, hardship - and some less-than-fair dealing on the part of some of the key figures. But it was an impressive undertaking, and the book touches on many aspects of it from inspiration to aftermath. [The US Postal Service released a set of stamps honoring the 150th anniversary of the completion of the railroad; the set includes stamps for the locomotives from both the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific sides, and stamps for the Golden Spike itself.]
