I got this book at a local Goodwill thrift shop.

I've had mixed results with Cornwell, loving some of her books while finding others (such as her attempt at identifying Jack The Ripper) very unsatisfactory. This one... isn't one of the "love" books. All the characters seem to be pretty miserable (with the possible exception of the villain, and even then...), and their interactions were painful to read about. I can take a certain amount of anguish in a crime thriller, but this was relentless - and, worse, I found that I couldn't like any of the characters very much. The crimes themselves were of an especially disturbing nature, but the solution felt like a cop-out to me. Ah, well, perhaps someone else will enjoy this!

I plan to leave this book in or near the library while visiting the Merrimack Valley Halloween Book Festival. Hope someone enjoys the book!
