I'm on a kick reading books in the WWII genre, and I've enjoyed other books by this author, so picked this up at Half Price Books today.

9 stars - only deducting 1 star because the book was little long, and some parts could have been shortened.

Quinn really knows how to write historical fiction in the WWII genre. I enjoyed The Alice Network, and probably liked this one even more. She has a knack for telling a very compelling fictional story that's laced with historical events and actual people, while focusing on female characters.

This story alternates between different POVs and time frames, but that didn't detract from it at all as there weren't too many, and they were clearly marked. In fact, as the time frames begin to converge on each other, the suspense rises. There are a clear set of main characters, and I actually really enjoyed all of them -- they're each likable and flawed in their own relatable ways. Some here have said that they could do without the romantic relationships that developed between some of the characters, but I thought it added to the dynamic in a relevant way in each instance.

The story unfolds sort of like a whodunnit, and by the end nearly all of the answers are clearly spelled out (there are a couple that you have to imagine, or recall from references earlier in the book) - and that sort of "tying it up with a bow" appeals to me.

I also found all of the aspects related to the Night Witches to be fascinating. Quinn does a fantastic job painting the picture of what life in general might have been like in war-torn Russia, and with the all-female aerial bomber squadron specifically. The fact that the squadron and the nature of there missions were real was even more interesting.

This is definitely one of the better WWII novels I've read in a while and I'll be recommending it to others who enjoy the genre.
