I think the best single-sentence sum-up for this book would be that I was astonished when I finished it and flipped to the back to read the author's bio, to discover that it had been written by a white man. No offense to the numerous white dudes who write sci-fi, but I definitely expect a certain vibe off their stories, and can't think of another time when I found a POC teenage girl so convincingly written by one of them.

There are two things that really stood out in this book: our main character, and some spectacular and somewhat unsettling world-building. Anglet is a steeplejack, repairing, cleaning, and maintaining the upper levels of this alternate history's skyscrapers, and she is a magnetic and memorable girl with many complex, intersecting and conflicting obligations and dreams.

The world here is a steampunk take on European-invaded southern Africa, and the author really goes all out creating the stratified city and society. It feels vivid and believable, with a gritty grace that echoes the people living in it. It also has some fantasy-esque contributions from a gem that literally creates light, reminiscent of Dinotopia.
