This was a book that I was delighted to find at my local bookstore, since I had seen pre-release reviews and it sounded like my cup of tea.
It's a post-apocalyptic adventure set on the former Dine reserve, now one of the few places that hasn't flooded or degenerated into social chaos as world governments and economies collapsed. The people living there already had figured out a lot of ways to make do without easy access to modern tech, and to make what tech they have last independent of the USA. The setting and fascinating fantasy elements are unique and immersive. The characters are a bit too straightforward, but I found myself getting quite attached by the end.
This does feel like a debut novel, with some wonky pacing, and unevenly expressed characters, but I was thoroughly impressed. One other important thing to note is that Roanhorse herself is not Dine, and her choice to turn Dine religious figures and ceremonies into characters for this novel is controversial.
