When 14-year-old Sophie encounters a mysterious mentor who introduces her to philosophy, mysteries deepen in her own life. Why does she keep getting postcards addressed to another girl? Who is the other girl? And who, for that matter, is Sophie herself? To solve the riddle, she uses her new knowledge of philosophy, but the truth is far stranger than she could have imagined.

With a book like this, it's important to know what kind of book it is before you read it. First and foremost this is an educational book, thinly disguised as a novel, so if it's light fiction you’re after then this isn't the book for you. When I picked this up I don't think I was expecting a philosophy lesson. I do quite enjoy a little philosophy and did study it as part of my degree but I still skipped parts of it in this book. I enjoyed Hume but maybe that’s because I studied the Scottish Enlightenment and I also enjoyed Darwin but the rest were an effort. About half-way through the book, a potentially interesting idea/twist is introduced however it just annoyed me, especially the ending. My main gripe about this book is that Sophie's dialogue can feel a bit contrived coming across as conceited and contemptuous at times. Then there is the slightly sinister side – a middle aged man writing about an old man talking to a 15 year old girl about sex, teenage boys dreaming of breasts and pornography. Plus teenage sex, voyeurism and child abduction.
