Surviving Hitler: A Boy in the Nazi Death Camps
2 journalers for this copy...
Summary from Goodreads:
Until Hitler came to power, Jack Mandelbaum was hardly aware of his Jewish heritage. Then, torn from his family and in a concentration camp, fifteen-year-old Jack suddenly found himself questioning his identity as he mustered the spirit to win the cruelest of games that he was forced to play.
Award-winning author Andrea Warren combines haunting photographs from World War II concentration camps with the inspiring words of Jack Mandelbaum to tell the powerful true story of a boy becoming a man in the Holocaust.

Thank you, book_drunkard! I look forward to reading it.
Quick, interesting, and sobering read. The more accounts like this I read, the more amazement I feel for the ingenuity and quick-thinking of people in Jack's situation, where even the tiniest split-second decision can be the difference between life and death.
Surviving Hitler prompted me to look up a list of all transit, work and extermination camps run by the Nazis. I had no idea there were so many sub-camps and satellites of the larger ones. Incredible.
I think more books on topics like this need to get into the hands of younger readers, especially in today's political climate. The younger generation is in danger of not learning from the horrors of the past.
