Early spring in the Sierra Nevada, bringing the usual driving sleet and snow. PI Kinsey Millhone is on her way west when she detours into Nota Lake to check out a new client. And encounters a chill she can scarely believe. Only six weeks have passed since sheriff's detective Tom Newquist died of a heart attack. His widow is sure he was keeping secrets from her just before he died and she hires Kinsey to find out exactly what. But all Kinsey can uncover is that Newquist led an exemplary life, so what could he possibly have to conceal? And why has the town, to the last threatening redneck, closed ranks on her? Kinsey's on the point of giving up. Until she discovers a chilling new clue: a childish drawing of a thick length of rope - fashioned in a hangman's noose...

Oh my, I would have given up long before Kinsey even thought about it. IMO she should have dumped the case. It was vague and hopeless, like looking for a needle in a haystack and that was before she became the target of an entire town.

Kinsey is in a small town, the kind loved by horror film makers. If they don't want you around you know about it. I agree that she shouldn'the taken on this case.

Going to diane-fraser

Finished reading last week. I was certain Kinsey hadn't a chance at solving this one but that little niggle kept her going .

Waiting to hear about the spiral update to know who to send to next....

Kinsey Millhone, PI, takes on a case in a small town in the middle of nowhere - with both the weather and the attitude of the residents freezing cold. She's been hired by the not-well-liked wife of a much loved local policeman, recently deceased, to find out what it is that was troubling him in the last few weeks of his life. For a while Kinsey is getting nowhere, and finding herself threatened is on the point of giving up, but there's always one last avenue to explore first and the dead man's doodles could mean more than they appear. This one is a bit more chilling than some of the others, with the descriptions of violence a bit much for me! It's still a gripping read though.

Once I got warmed up again to Grafton’s style of writing I got quite into this book. We were introduced to some new characters, one or two plot twists and a rather small minded community that brought some past issues back to Kinsey. I’ve had a bit of a gap in between Grafton reads and it felt quite familiar to get back into the alphabet books again.

I’m just waiting on an address and I’ll get the book moving as soon as possible. Thanks for letting me join the spiral.

I finally finished this book. It was a good read, but I admit to being a bit distracted by the current Covid-19 crisis.

I was intrigued as always by the mystery to be solved by Kinsey, but did often wish she would just give up on the case and go home! However, that is really not her nature as she likes to see things through no matter how hopeless or dangerous things seem.

I am waiting to see if penelopewanders would like me to send the book now or hold off a bit due to the current crisis.

FINALLY! This was waiting for me when I returned from holiday... so it arrived sometime between mid-July and mid-August. All's well that ends well. I am sorry not to have been able to read it when I had plenty of time on holiday, but at least it's here and when the first phase of returning to work calms a bit, I'll be able to read it. I hope I'll be able to get it on its way fairly soon as we note how slow things can be! Thanks so much for sending.

Journal Entry 17 by wingpenelopewanderswing at Hasliberg, Bern / Berne Switzerland on Friday, August 28, 2020
Hmm, apparently I read this 12 years ago. Astonishingly, I have zero recollection and nothing in the story felt familiar as I was reading. Here's what I wrote for bookcrossing back then: "Hadn't read a Sue Grafton in ages... fun. Seems she feels less confident than I remembered her as being in her earlier books, and I remember being impressed by how, come rain or come shine, she'd go running etc and sort out all her problems while running (almost...). In this one, there were days when she couldn't be bothered... boy, can I relate to that! "

Now I've read it again as part of the Sue Grafton alphabet spiral, started after her death. She does get very badly shaken when assaulted towards the beginning of the story, and doesn't quite recover her nerve until the final showdown - and even there, there's some external assistance (no spoilers, though.) Lots of twists and turns in this one. Still entertaining.

A bit of a fractured read this time, so when finishing the book a couple of things were still foggy, so I went back and speedread the relevant bits - it plays nicely in hindsight. As always, my greatest enjoyment was derived from reading the introspective, self-derisive bits and from following Kinsey's adventures rather than the mystery - but I appreciated the notes on community solidarity, even when this time the village was manipulated into turning against the wrong villain.

Thank you for sharing! This time I am jumping into O right away. Depending on my speed, they might travel together next. Last year a book sent overseas around this time took two months, though, even if sent airmail-priority - and we weren't dealing with a pandemic yet..
