DI Macleod, a professional police officer who worries about the effect her job is having on her marriage and on her young sons, and Jasmine Sharpe, an aspiring actress who had dropped out of drama school to care for her dying mother. After her mother passed away, Jasmine went to work for her Uncle Jim, a private investigator. When Uncle Jim disappears, Jasmine looks into his open cases to try to find out what happened to him. She ends up being drawn into a forty year old mystery and also into dark secrets about her own past.

This is a possibly a darker, certainly a less humorous book than Brookmyre's earlier works, it is much more of a conventional thriller. That said, Brookmyre is still an immensely readable writer, I thoroughly enjoyed following Jasmine on her journey and I’m so glad she found Tron. I loved not just the crime but the personal lives of the two women. The second book is a must.

Picked up from todays meet-up. Have already enjoyed " When the Devil Drives" which I thought was the first Jasmine Sharp book but apparently this one is. Will be good to find out how things started & I am used to reading a series out of order! 😀

A good read on the whole but one I found a little confusing as I sometimes struggled to keep track of some of the characters & thus might have overlooked done of the intricacies of the plot.

The plot mainly centres around Jasmine, a trainee PI in her uncles business, a role she seems to be having trouble settling into. However, her PI skills are put to the test when her uncle vanishes during the investigation into the disappearance of a family over twenty years ago. Add to this gangsters, possible police corruption & the mysterious Tron Ingrams & you have the makings of an entertaining enough tale.

There's two female leads in this series & as a contrast to the young inexperienced PI there's Catherine, a Detective Superintendent. While there's nothing to particularly dislike about Jasmine, I found her a bit insipid & wishy-washy with my interest in her side of the story only picking up with the entrance of Tron Ingrams. Catherine, on the other hand, had a stronger personality & I liked the banter between her & her DI Laura.

Both women's cases are, unsurprisingly, connected & the investigations come together, with the resolution to the family's disappearance being quite original/bizarre - delete as appropriate! But as, I've said I found some of the complexities a little bit muddling at times.

The final chapter came as a surprise - unless I've misinterpreted it- because I've already read book 2 (review here) & I don't recall any reference to this revelation in it. If there was it obviously didn't make an impression on me.

A good read at the time of reading but one that I think will have merged in my mind with many others in a month or two. Only time will tell...
