Cassandra Parkin grew up in Hull, and now lives in East Yorkshire.
The Summer We All Ran Away (Legend Press, 2013) was Cassandra's debut novel.

About the book:
When nineteen-year-old Davey finds himself drunk, beaten and alone, he is rescued by the oddly assorted inhabitants of an abandoned and beautiful house in the West Country. Their only condition for letting him join them is that he asks them no questions.

More than thirty years ago in that same house, burned-out rock star Jack Laker writes a ground-breaking comeback album, and abandons the girl who saved his life to embark on a doomed and passionate romance with a young actress. His attempt to escape his destructive lifestyle leads to deceit, debauchery and even murder.

As Davey and his fellow housemate Priss try to uncover the secrets of the house's inhabitants, both past and present, it becomes clear that the five strangers have all been drawn there by the events and the music of that long-ago summer.

Thanks so much for the bonus book! I really enjoyed Parkin's The Beach Hut, and look forward to reading this book!

Later: I thoroughly enjoyed this one, with its usually-gentle, sometimes-threatening air of mystery. In the present, four lost souls meet at a remote mansion, one with a history as the colorful party-house of famed rock star Jack Laker. In a flashback to some 30 years past, we get to see what Jack's life was like, and how he became disenchanted with the mad rock lifestyle when he fell in love. The stories of the characters past and present unfold from different viewpoints and not-always-synchronous order, building up a picture of the characters, the pasts they're fleeing from, and for some, a hoped-for future. Plenty of atmosphere, lots of clues - some a bit misleading; I got rather confused about the silent Isaac's sister-or-was-she, who was only mentioned a handful of times but may have had a key role in the events that upset Jack's life. But overall I found it charming and entrancing, and I loved getting to know the characters.
