Genre: Suspense , Dystopian fiction. This is a fascinating story about a honey bee named Flora 717 and the society and cast system she is hatched into. This book is about Apis mellifera (honey bees) and the life & death within a hive. The author anthropomorphizes the bees & wasps and other animals to tell the story. Given that, much of the information about the bees and wasps societies in this book is fairly accurate from an entomological standpoint.

The sense of smell and the power of scent is an important aspect throughout this book. We must remember that we humans are destroying so much in the natural world including our own health with petroleum-based products which includes the proliferation of fragrances and fragrance enhancers that are being sold to wash clothes, skin & hair and even dishes... Scented laundry detergents advertised to last 3 washings are now "new and improved" to last 10 washings. These fragrances cover odors artificially with oil based chemicals but do not really clean or clear the air or your clothing. They are merely cover ups. Be mindful of the sense of smell and of the chemicals you use in everyday cleaning products.
