Age range: 13 years plus (in my opinion)

Another excellent fantasy novel (geared more towards teens/young adults) that is part of the "wayward children" series.

I was delighted to find this in the Little Free Library when I stopped by to drop off some books of my own. I loved the first book in this series, Every Heart a Doorway, and wanted to read this one!

Later: This book deals with twin sisters Jack and Jill, showing their family life (not good) and the ways in which their parents' criminally restrictive ideas of what they expected their kids to be warped the poor kids for life. Or did it? When the twins open a chest in the attic to discover a staircase that descends far below the actual house, they find themselves in a bleak moor under a blood-red moon - a world that seems based on all the horror tropes, from vampires and werewolves to mad scientists. The twins find that they have unexpected choices here - though with considerable peril; the ways in which they cope with the situation are intriguing and entertaining. My only quibble is that this would be a very frustrating read if I hadn't already read "Doorway", but as a companion book it's great!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the book, with some entertaining tidbits.]
