With five starred reviews, Tomi Adeyemi''s West African-inspired fantasy debut, and instant #1 New York Times Bestseller, conjures a world of magic and danger, perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sabaa Tahir.
They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.
Now we rise.
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie''s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

BEA swag for the Calgary Bookcrossing group :)
Picked up at the June Calgary bookcrossing meetup.
I don’t know what I expected when I started this book but I got sucked in right away and finished it in a day. There’s a lot of young adult book and fairy tale cliches but still such a good read.
Will be brought to Calgary book crossing for the next reader.

picked up at the September meeting
Reading the author's comments at the end of the book puts this story in a whole new perspective.
I brought this home from the December meetup at Cravings Restaurant.
I first waited for the downloadable version of this. When I was listening, I got a bit confused, so finally picked up the paper version and could track who was talking. I think because I was reading this in COVID time, I needed to take it in smaller doses. It was petty disturbing, when I read the Author's note at the end (alright, so that was part way through) and it really struck as we were just going through the BLack Lives Matter demonstrations after George Floyd died when a policeman killed him when cutting off his air supply. Disturbing. Strange ending. I assume there is more to come.
This book is going into the COVID Meeting Box that is being circulated.
Picked this out of the Calgary bookcrossing book box
A very interesting read but it did take me a long time to read it. I had to keep putting it away for a bit and then would pick it up again. Worth the time it took me to read this especially after I read the author's note at the end.
