I went through a phase of reading lots of books on Japanese culture, and this was one of them. I really enjoyed it, but it’s been a couple of years since I last picked it up, so it’s time for it to go to a new home :)

Thank you so much for this wish granting RABCK! Lucky you put it into a release bag as judging by the soggy outer state, my poor postman must have half drowned getting to to me. Hope you enjoyed your holiday. I haven’t forgotten about you, books in return will follow shortly.

Journal Entry 4 by Shahrun at Dagenham, Essex United Kingdom on Saturday, September 21, 2019
Really fascinating, moving, shocking. The levels of poverty described in this book are almost beyond my comprehension. Very impressed with her writing and wanting to share her story in 1957 as it must have been truly shocking for people at the time. That shows true strength of character. I just can’t get over reading about all the things she endured and survived! Shame she wouldn’t ever get to meet the translator but very happy she has found peace. It’s unbelievable that she been through all that by time she was 32!

I decided to read this one before releasing. I'm pleased I did although it was an upsetting read - I can't believe the amount of terrible things this poor woman went through in her life.

I adored the way this book was written. The pain, sadness, depth of despair and glimmer of hope really resonate with the reader. So much so, it is sad that it is an autobiography - and I had to keep reminding myself of this.

For a short book, the emotions are very intense, but thoroughly worth the read.

REVIEW:-"I realised once I picked up this book that I had in fact read it before many years ago but was happy to re-read it. I felt that there was a good story to be told but found the whole thing rather disjointed, partly I feel due to things being "lost in translation" and partly because of the fact that the author was illiterate and uneducated for many years. She certainly had a very hard life and I was proud of the way that she took care of herself so bravely and resourcefully most of the time. I was a bit surprised when she reported that she sold soap for 2 1/2 years but admitted that it was extremely bad quality and would disintegrate in 2 or 3 days and make the skin peel off your hands. I wondered why people continued to buy it from her.
It was shocking to learn how she was expected to prostitute herself for many years just to be able to afford to eat and obtain the basic necessities of life."
Reserved for another bookcrosser.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This book will be travelling in the post to another bookcrosser.

To the finder:-
Welcome to bookcrossing -you have found a travelling book. Please make a journal entry now to say where you found the book in case it has been moved. Then, when you have read it, please come back and make a further entry saying whether or not you enjoyed the book and why. It is now yours to do as you like with it, pass it to a friend or just leave it somewhere different for someone else to find and help it with its' journey. Of course if you can't bear to part with it at the moment then keep it, but please let me know that you have found it. If you join bookcrossing, which is free and spam-free, you can follow the book on its' travels as you will get an email each time it changes hands, but if you prefer to remain anonymous, that's fine too. Please also say what you intend to do with the book next. Thanks for coming onto the site to let me know you have found the book.

I already have books travelling in many countries around the world-a list can be found on my bookcrossing profile.

When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.

Fascinating story - first hand reminiscence - of life as a geisha in a poverty stricken area of Japan. Shocking in places, heartwrenching in others. Very interesting.

All the way through this tale of abuse and brutal poverty I had to keep reminding myself how young the main character was. Just a child for much of the events taking place. What strength of character to be able to keep going in the face of all this. Thanks for passing this one on to me, I hope to find a new reader soon.
