The Brief History of the Dead

The story alternates between a woman who is beginning to realize that she may be alone in Antarctica and a world where people who have died and crossed over to a city where they begin to realize they exist as long as someone alive remembers them.
There are many threads to explore—what it is to be alone, ideas about an afterlife, how many people we interact with in a lifetime.
I have felt it is different to have no one currently alive who remembers a person. I remember feeling a different kind of sadness realizing that there was probably no one alive who remembers one of my grandfathers who died in the 1920’s. This fits in with this book.
