I got this paperback at a local thrift shop. It's from Hayder's wrenching and grisly series centering on police detective Jack Caffrey, following The Treatment and leading into Skin. (I first read this one via library book, and was glad to find a release copy.)

Hayder's books are very well-written but also very, very dark, with some of the most gruesome and horrific crimes I've encountered in fiction. This one's not the most harrowing of the series but it certainly has its grim segments. It does feature the intriguing secondary character Flea Marley, a police diver with her own personal demons. Here, she finds a severed hand in a local harbor, which leads her and Caffery to a disappearance and a very troublesome case.

The book opens with what seems a non sequitur, an atmospheric description of Boesmansgat, aka "Bushman's Hole", a 900+ feet deep freshwater sinkhole in South Africa. (This is a real-world location, probably best known for the heart-wrenching story of a young diver who was lost there, and whose body was recovered ten years later by an experienced diver - who lost his own life in the process.) This does tie in to Flea's story, though, with a major impact on her life...

This book also introduces the enigmatic "Walking Man," whom Caffery believes to have knowledge of his long-lost brother's fate.
