I bought this book today at a charity shop here in my hometown of Cambridge, ON. I mostly bought it because it's set in Cuba and will help me out with a reading challenge I'm participating in here on BookCrossing. I don't know much about the book or the author, but it seems like it could be an interesting read.

I can guess from two bookmarks found in the book that it probably passed through the hands of a couple of readers in London, ON before making its way to a shop in Cambridge-- and it was probably a while ago. One bookmark was from Huron University College, which is the founding college of University of Western Ontario and is located in London, and the other is an obviously old bookmark from a used bookstore in London called H. Sommers Books. That shop is not around anymore and the phone number on the bookmark is only 7 digits, so it must be kind of old now!

Anyway, I am setting this book's status to To Be Read for the time being, and I'll journal it again at a later date.

I finished reading this book in the wee hours of Oct. 2nd. It took me a long time to get through this one, and I had a strange relationship with it.

I thought the background for this story (the setting) was interesting, and I had high hopes for the plot... but it didn't really deliver, as far as I am concerned. I thought the writing was quite beautiful at times, but at other times I really didn't like the writing style. There was a lot of sex, which I wasn't expecting and is something I tend to dislike in my literature. If I weren't reading it for a challenge, I might not have made it through this... which says a lot because I can count on one hand the number of times I have intentionally stopped reading a book. This one was less my style than I thought it might be. I persisted with it because of my challenge, and I hoped that it would at least end happily... I suppose that whether it ended happily or not is a matter of opinion, but it wasn't the ending I'd hoped for.

I don't think this book was all bad, but it definitely was not a great fit for me. I don't know exactly what I'll do with it next but I'm thinking probably a RABCK. I hope it finds a reader for whom it is a better fit.

Sending as a RABCK to ciloma in the US! It wasn't really my kind of book, but I hope it will be hers! Enjoy, ciloma!
