It is interesting that the author, Lois Lowry, said that she set out to write about the nature of memory. There is some of that here but for me the question of what it means to live a life free from pain, danger, feelings, a life that is controlled and modulated is the main theme. It IS a children’s book so the language is simple but the ideas it explores are profound.
